April 24 2026. Hanmer Springs Ski Area has opened today following an early burst of April snow, marking one of the first skiable days of the 2026 season

Around 20-30cm has fallen over the past few days, with more higher up. The Shirtfront Tow is operating, offering early-season skiing and riding – expect natural, mixed conditions rather than groomed runs. One of the earliest ski field openings seen in recent New Zealand history.

There’s also enough snow for tobogganing and snow play, making it a solid early outing for families.

Chains are required for 2WD vehicles, and 4WDs should carry them. Robinson Lodge is open for the weekend for those wanting to stay.

It’s early, it’s a bit raw – but it’s skiing in April.
