The best snow conditions of the season so far
August has begun with snow, snow – and more snow. In fact, as we write this, it is snowing again. We can now say that ski fields across New Zealand are experiencing the best snow conditions of the 2026 season so far.
As you all know, snow has fallen across New Zealand over the past few weeks, bringing fantastic powder conditions to many ski areas, including club fields such as Craigieburn Valley Ski Area, as well as Porters Alpine Resort.
With continuous southwesterly storms rolling up the country – you’ve got to love El Niño – ski fields are receiving regular top-ups that are steadily increasing snow bases across New Zealand.
El Niño Has Joined the Party
Continuous southwesterly storms are rolling up the country, as predicted with El Niño. These regular snow top-ups are building some excellent bases, as shown in the table below.
Last week’s storm delivered around 15cm to 40cm to the Southern Lakes, while Canterbury ski fields generally reported between 10cm and 25cm. Mt Ruapehu also received fresh snow, with Whakapapa reporting between 10cm and 20cm, and Tūroa receiving considerably more across parts of the mountain.

New Zealand’s ski season has moved into top gear
August is traditionally one of the most reliable months of the New Zealand ski season, and this year it has arrived, as usual at the right time. We always wait for this time of year!
The major ski areas now have strong bases, fresh snow has improved off-trail conditions, and colder weather is helping consolidate coverage. Another couple of settled days should also give grooming and mountain teams time to prepare more terrain.
