Snow guns at Whakapapa Ski Area 2026

Whakapapa Ski Area has added new snow guns ahead of the 2026 winter season, increasing snowmaking capacity and improving coverage in key areas including Happy Valley and the Rockgarden

The latest upgrades include carriage snow guns, which can be moved around the mountain as needed. Unlike fixed systems, these guns allow the operations team to place snowmaking exactly where it’s required, depending on weather and conditions.

Increased snowmaking capacity

The investment builds on confirmed upgrades, including the installation of 10 new TT10 automated snow guns, lifting overall snowmaking capacity by around 20%.

These systems are designed to operate efficiently in marginal temperatures, helping maintain snow production even when conditions are less favourable.

Focus on early season and key terrain

Happy Valley is the beginner ski area at Whakapapa and will continue to benefit from more snowmaking, now unto 10 guns located in Happy Valley. This also includes the Snow Factory capable of producing up to four tonnes of snow per hour.

Extending snowmaking into areas like the Rockgarden will only create better access and helps keep important terrain links open.

Flexible snowmaking on the Maunga

Carriage snow guns add flexibility to Whakapapa’s snowmaking approach. Their mobility allows teams to:

  • Prioritise high-use areas
  • Adjust to changing weather
  • Maintain consistent coverage across the ski field

On a mountain known for variable conditions, that flexibility plays an important role in keeping terrain open and skiable.
