24 July Update – Snow and stormy weather ahead
Whakapapa is expecting a significant change in the weather this weekend, with heavy snow forecast across Mt Ruapehu. Current forecasts suggest between 20cm and 50cm could fall across Saturday and Sunday.
The weather is expected to be rough while the storm moves through, with strong winds, poor visibility and snow likely to affect lift operations and the Bruce Road. Anyone planning to visit should check the latest Whakapapa report and road conditions before travelling. Once the weather settles, the new snow should provide a welcome boost to coverage and help support further terrain opening.
17 July Update – Rangatira Express now open
Whakapapa has opened more terrain, with the Rangatira Express now open for skiing and snowboarding. Happy Valley remains open for beginners, with the Toru Carpet and Double Happy chair operating (Happy Valley learners area). The Rockgarden is also open and groomed.
Snowland is open for sledding, tubing and snowplay, while the Sky Waka gondola is operating for sightseeing only. The Bruce Road is open, with drivers advised to take care.
The upper mountain remains limited, with the Valley T-bar, Delta quad, Knoll Ridge T-bar and Far West T-bar yet to open.

8 July Update – Happy Valley is now open for skiing and snowboarding
The Happy Valley Carpets and Double Happy Chairlift will be open from 9:00am. Snowland, the Sky Waka Gondola, and Knoll Ridge Chalet will also open from 9:00am.
3 July Update – Whakapapa has confirmed that Happy Valley will not open for general skiing and snowboarding as planned on Saturday 4 July
Happy Valley will not open for lift-accessed skiing and snowboarding on Saturday 4 July due to limited snow cover. Whakapapa says snowmaking has made good progress, but more cold nights are needed before conditions are ready for safe lift operations.
Snowland remains open daily, along with scenic rides on the Sky Waka gondola to Knoll Ridge Chalet. Whakapapa also has school holiday events, giveaways, activations, food and Happy Hour at Lorenz’s Bar & Café.
