Mt Hutt snow received a small boost over the weekend, with around 7-10 centimetres of fresh snow falling on the upper slopes as a weak southerly front moved up New Zealand
It wasn’t a major snowfall event, so there wasn’t much accumulation lower down. However, the good news is that temperatures have dropped enough for snowmaking to get underway properly.
With opening day set for 12 June, the Mt Hutt snow conditions remain light for this time of year. However, snowmaking crews now have the colder temperatures needed to begin building coverage. Every cold night helps improve conditions, particularly on beginner and lower-mountain trails.
Looking ahead, another weather system is expected later this week (see our seasonal forecast). A warm rain front is forecast to move through first, but there is the potential for some snowfall at the back end of the system as conditions turn colder and the flow shifts to the south.

Nothing is guaranteed yet, but with colder temperatures now settling in and snowmaking running, things are starting to feel a lot more like winter.
With opening day now only days away at Mt Hutt, keep a close eye on the forecast. We’ll keep you updated.
