August is proving to be a good month for skiing in New Zealand, with regular snowfall, cold temperatures and established bases combining to produce some great winter conditions
Rather than one major storm, the month has been shaped by a series of smaller weather systems bringing regular top-ups across the country. That has helped maintain coverage and refresh ski fields between clearer periods, particularly through Canterbury, the Southern Lakes and Mt Ruapehu.
The latest front to cross the country over the weekend added another useful layer of fresh snow. Mt Hutt was one of the standouts, reporting around 25cm and an upper base of approximately 1.8 metres. The Remarkables received around 20cm, while Tūroa reported around 15cm over the past seven days.
Conditions have also remained positive across the Southern Lakes, where regular snowfall through August has been followed by some good fine days between systems. Canterbury continues to hold some of the strongest bases in the country, while Ruapehu has also benefited from continued snowfall through the month so far.
The encouraging part of August so far has been the consistency. Fresh snow has continued to arrive on already established bases, helping keep ski areas in good shape as the season moves into its second half.
