Just over an hour from Christchurch, Porters is the closest and most accessible on mountain experience

Driving
Take Highway 73 heading west from Christchurch, and it’s an easy, predominantly straight drive to Porters. You’ll pass through the small country townships of Darfield, Sheffield and Springfield, our base village and the last stop to get petrol before you head up.

From Springfield, you head through the Porters Pass, past Lake Lyndon, and we are well signposted on the left side of the road.

Before you head off, check this page to see if snow chains are required. We offer a free mountain road shuttle daily.

Transport Providers
Smylies Tours in Springfield is our preferred transport provider. They have various options to suit, including Christchurch to Porters’ shuttles. More info can be found here.

Porters Shuttle Service
A free shuttle bus will run from the chain-fitting area on the mountain access road.

These will run on the weekends, during the school holidays and on days when chains are required. Pick-up time: 8:45 am (if the 8:45 am bus is full, another will run at 9:30 am). Leaving mountain time: 2:45 pm & 4:00 pm

Follow the signs on the Porters’ access road until you reach the chain-fitting area. This will be signposted, where you will park and meet the shuttle bus. The scheduled shuttle service is complimentary to guests.
